Seeing God....in the Bathroom

A life lesson with a little lady through God's loving and gentle way

“Mom, I don’t want to go to college,” said my then four year old as she found me in the bathroom one day.

As I bent down, I wondered why my preschooler was thinking about college already. So I said, “Well, let’s talk about it. Why are you thinking about this?”

“Well I’m just not sure I’m ready for college. I don’t want to move away on my own yet. I just don’t feel ready,” she said.

She often talks to me already about growing up, getting married, and having babies so it’s not unusual for her to think about the future.

“You’re right! You’re not quite ready for college just yet,” I said and we laughed together.

“But you have so much time to learn and grow and then we will see. Mommy doesn’t think that all of us have to go to college. It’s right for some people but not all people. Does that make sense?”

“But here’s what matters most: We need to talk to God and ask what He wants you to do as you grow up. You are wonderfully made with a purpose. God has a plan for you, and we just need to ask Him about it. He will direct your steps. We believe this for you! Let’s pray about it together and then you can talk to God about it more any time. And I will keep praying for you too.”

And then I felt God’s spirit nudge me: “It’s the same for you. Can you pray this for yourself too?"

"You can come to me and pray through the times that now seem uncertain and changing. You may not know what will happen as you think at times you’d like to, but I know your future. Trust me. Give it to me. Follow me.”

So I turned the prayer to myself (why does that feel harder?!?!) too and thanked God for sending this little child to help straighten me out!

“God, what do you want me to do? Please lead and direct me. Thank you for this different chance to serve. Please help me see and follow your will and way, not my own.”

Isn’t God’s way the best though?

He doesn’t hammer us when we need some redirection or reminding. He’s just loving and gentle.

He helps us see Him if we are looking.

I’m thankful I saw God that day in my bathroom with my little lady and am keeping these scriptures in mind.

Taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him! Psalm 34:8

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11

She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future. Proverbs 31:25
